Homemade Pop Tarts

I first made these, when I was preparing some weekly meals when I was pregnant with Wendy. I knew that she would make an appearance within a week and wanted to make sure I had some premade food in the fridge to make the transition from pregnant to mommy easier. Needless to say, these didn’t even last two days…Chris and I ate them all. It was okay though, these homemade pop tarts are easy to made and quick to whip up.

What makes them better is that you won’t need much to start making these yourself. Just grab a box of premade Pie Crusts, a jar of strawberry jam, icing sugar, an egg, and some milk. That’s it.

Rolling out the premade pie crusts and cut out rectangle pieces. Spread the jam and use another rectangle dough piece to cover it. Crimp the edges, brush an egg wash over it to give it a golden look as they bake.

Bake them, remove them, let them cool. Whip up the glaze and pour it over your pop tarts.

These will keep in an airtight container in your fridge for about 1 week, but they are much tastier fresh. To reheat, pop them in a toast oven or warm at 200F in your oven for 5-10 minutes. DO NOT PUT THEM IN A TOASTER.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box of ready made pie dough
  • strawberry jam (or any flavour)
  • 1 egg
  • sprinkles
  • 1 cup icing sugar
  • 3–4 tbsp milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out the pie dough and cut into equal rectangles
  3. Separate the rectangles.
  4. Spread 2-3 tsp of jam on half of the rectangles
  5. Top with a piece of pie crust and crimp the edges to seal each pop tart. Brush the tops with egg.
  6. Bake for 7-9 minutes.
  7. Take them out of the oven and let them cool for 5-10 minutes.
  8. Make the glaze as they cool. Put 1 cup of icing sugar into a bowl and add milk, 1 tbsp at a time. Stir as you add the milk. You want the glaze to be a medium consistency (not too runny or too thick).
  9. Spread the glaze over the cooled pop tarts and add sprinkles.
  10. Store pop tarts in an airtight container. To heat them up again, pop them into a toaster oven or oven. DO NOT PUT THEM IN A TOASTER.
