If you haven’t already watched Disney’s newest animated film, Zootopia, you need to. Chris and I ventured out to the locate movie house this weekend and enjoyed every minute of it. Even with its tough theme, it was such a wonderful, feel-good movie.  If you have been living under a rock for the last few months…and have no idea what the heck I’m talking about, you can check out the official trailer if you follow this link –> Zootopia Trailer!

I laughed, I cried,  and at moments I held on to Chris’ hand tighter ….yes I’m just a kid in a grown ups body…There were many things I adored about the film. For one, there is no couple-y romantic theme. It’s refreshing to see Disney starting to move away from the overbearing-make-me-puke romantic princess stories. The two main characters of the film, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, are an amazing case-solving dual who build a strong friendship throughout the film. They have quickly become my favourite team of Disney pals. Judy Hopps is voiced by the very talented Ginnifer Goodwin (Once Upon a Time) and Nick Wilde is voiced by Jason Bateman (Couples Retreat). The voice talents could not have been picked better. These two worked perfectly.

If I’m being entirely honest, my favourite thing was the way Disney handled the topic of overcoming stereotypes and prejudice. This theme is made obviously clear from the very beginning of the film. Judy is a bunny who is determined to be a police officer. Her parents attempt to discourage her from pursuing her dream because they fear it’s dangerous and that bunnies don’t become police officers. Without spoiling too much, Judy does follow her dreams and is met with barriers along the way. However, even though Judy fights through to become the police officer she is later faced with the realization that she holds some damaging prejudices and stereotypes about other animals. This just goes to show that anyone can hold prejudices that they are not obviously aware of. Brilliant, right? I know it’s an old concept but considering what has been going on around the world, this film could not have come at a better time. The film handles prejudice and stereotypes in a way that both adults and kids can understand and appreciate.

What’s another reason I absolutely love this film, the soundtrack. Go ahead, I dare you to listen to Shakira’s ‘Try Everything’ and not break out your dance moves. I also know that the reason I love the soundtrack, especially that song is that it calls to me in some weird way. I am someone who wants to do everything. I love learning, I love new challenges and learning new skills. It’s fun and exciting and probably why I can’t seem to just pick one hobby or want just one career path. So put yourself out there, and be anything you want to be.

If the reasons above aren’t enough to convince you, you should check out the quality of the animation! Chris and I watched the film in 3-D and it was amazing. I actually forgot I was wearing those stupid 3-D glasses, which never happens.

So go get thee to a Movie House and watch this hilarious, touching, and thought-provoking film. You won’t be disappointed, trust me.

New Challenges: Running

RunDisney Blog Photo

So I signed up  Chris and I for the RunDisney Star Wars Dark side 5km race in April. I have to admit that I’m both excited and nervous. I use to run years ago then life kind happened and the next thing I knew, running had become a distant memory. So a few months after my miscarriage, I had a redefining moment, an awakening, I guess you could call it. I looked at myself in the mirror and realized that I no longer recognized the woman staring back at me. After years of falling into a dark hole, maybe one day I’ll share why, I decided enough was enough. I didn’t like the person I had become. I decided I didn’t want to continue down the same path.

So in an effort to find that woman I could love again, I decided that I need to refocus my life again. I’ve been doing hot yoga again, mediating, and dealing with my issues. I also changed my relationship with food (THANK YOU WHOLE30) , made time for the people and things that I love, and took up running again.

Okay, so if there is something that I have learned about running again, it would be that I NEVER SHOULD HAVE STOPPED!! Holy Crapola! It sucks to start over. I now run 2-3km everyday before work and I take my fur baby with me. I’m pretty sure she is judging me…We’re probably a pretty funny sight….my running pace is Lady’s power walking pace. BUT at least I’m running again. After a few weeks of running, I realized that I needed a goal. I don’t know about you, but I’m the type of person who needs goals and accountability. So I started surfing Pinterest for tips on running and came across RunDisney runners. I began reading their stories, their training routines, and their medals! Yup, those Disney medals. I want at least one of those. So that’s my motivation, I want a RunDisney medal. In order to make that happen, I surfed GoogleApps to find an app that want help me run 5km again. I could have used the Couch to 5k but instead I found Zombies5k. It’s fun and it keeps me interested while running. But I’m not going to lie, at 430am with ear phones on, it gets a little creepy….but it works.

Are you guys running? Are you or have you ever run a RunDisney event or any running event? How did you find it?

GOODBYE 2015

Dear 2015,

You’ve been one hell of a hard year. If someone had asked me to describe you a week ago, I would have said “you suck and you need to piss off already.” You have been quite the asshole, and I don’t think I’m the only one who has felt this way. I’m glad it’s almost over…and yet I’m a little sad. I remember having so much hope at the beginning of the year, and then it was gone and it has been a struggle to get any ounce of it back.

As I sit here typing this post, having a quiet New Year’s Eve with my wonderful, amazing husband and our Furbaby, I’m filled with a mixture of emotions. This year has been a year of struggle, despair, hope,  survival, and growth.  There were moments that I hated, that crushed me, that showed me the darkest parts of my soul, and yet those moments have inspired me. I truly believe I’m a better person, there is still plenty of work to be done but I’m confident that I can handle it, that my relationship can soar above all the difficult moments, and that better things are coming. I’ve already decided that no matter what, 2016 will be the best damn year and if not, I’ll make it so.

So let me raise my cup of tea and share my wish for 2016. I wish that 2016 brings you all the love, happiness, joy, and strength you deserve. That there are moments that will make you giggle and laugh, and moments that help you appreciate all you have. So here’s to a wonderful, kinder 2016.  So I hope you have a wonderful and joyous New Year, friends.

The Fall Adventure Date Night List

couple lying on a blanker under a classic triangle tent

Date nights are ab amazing excuse to reconnect with your spouse. I absolutely love our date nights. They are filled with togetherness, laughter, and yes, even talk of our little munchkin but it’s a great break from our everyday routine. There’s no doing dishes, chasing toddlers, or watching Frozen for the zillionth time. Although I personally don’t mind the Frozen watching…Chris, on the other hand, can’t function when the only song in his head is ‘Let it Go’ because he can’t let that go. So date nights are the perfect way to get away and focus on us. Plus it doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg. Some of these ideas are great for those hoping to enjoy some romantic and fun outings without opening up your wallet.Read More

Best Darn Apple Butter: Canuck Style

Apple Butter Canadian Style

Today I’m sharing a recipe that will leave your home smelling absolutely amazing, like fall apple fields. So Chris and I made a trip to The Apple Factory in Milton. No, we didn’t go apple picking, I would have probably loved that, but Chris has been gone most of the summer because of his job (he’s in the army) and then he was home for a week before he had to leave for another military exercise in England. Oh, the life of an army wife. So anyway, we decided to head over to the Apple Factory and picked up 3lbs of the most delicious apples and then we were ready to create apple magic.

I used my crockpot to make this amazing no sugar added Apple Butter. I love my crockpot. Whoever invented this pot of magic deserves all the apple butter in the world. *yes I have apples on the brain right now*  So in order to save myself the mess and headache of a long clean up, I decided to pull out my slow cooker plastic bag things *yup, technical terms, people.

Okay, so here’s what you’ll need for this awesome “butter.” Yeah, I should probably mention that there is no butter in apple butter. And the only reason it’s Canuck style is because I’m Canadian and it has booze in it…Essentially, my apple butter is like applesauce, except I spread it on toast, slices of bread, scones, etc.  It’s really good, well if you skip the Jack Daniels, and you don’t have to worry about added sugar.

Apple Butter Canadian Style

You’ll need:
3lb of apples (I used softer, sweeter apples)
1/4 cup water
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp allspice
1/2 tsp cloves
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 cup of Jack Daniels Tennessee Fire (optional)

First, peel all the apples. I’m pretty sure an apple peeler would have been handy but sometimes I like to rock it old school with my peelin’ knife. Once the apples are peeled, cut them into slices and toss away the core.

Place all the apple slices in the crockpot. Add the water, spices and Jack Daniels. Once everything is in the crockpot, set it to low for 6 hours. Now get all those Fall chores done, or make yourself my Pumpkin Spice Latte and enjoy the fact that your house will be gradually filled with an amazing Fall scent!

Check your apples once the 6 hours are up. Your apples should be very very soft and brownish.

At this point, I took my wooden spoon and stirred the apples. Once I started stirring, my apple butter began to take shape. Stir until the clumps are gone. Once stirred, I spooned the apple butter into mason jars and let cool before placing them in my fridge.

hmm…now I want bread and apple butter…I think I should go make some bread….enjoy!

What will you spread your apple butter on?

a healthier alternative pumpkin spice latte

‘Tis the season for pumpkin spice. Can you believe Starbucks has already started selling their famous Pumpkin Spice Latte? This year it supposedly contains real pumpkin (it’s really disconcerting that they actually had to advertise that…). Anyways, at the end of August, I received one of those PSL Fan Pass via email, like everyone else subscribed to receive Starbucks emails. This was exciting news, every year I look forward to my Pumpkin spice lattes! So the next morning, I picked up my grande PSL and guess what…I did not enjoy it at all.
