If you love going out for sushi, then you know how expensive it can be. Sushi is my comfort food, but I can’t afford to keep going out for it, so I had to figure out how to make my own. The main ingredient I had to get right was the sushi rice.

In order to make sushi rice, you actually need sushi rice. The one I use is called the Lundberg Family Farms® Voyages Organic California Sushi Rice. Sushi rice is some of the tastiest rice you can make. It’s sometimes referred to as sticky rice because of it’s starchy and sticky texture, which makes it great for roll and holding its shape.

The most important step in making sushi rice is to rinse the rice before you cook it. You’re probably thinking ‘why the hell do I need to rinse something I’m about to cook?’ Washing the rice helps remove some of the starch on the rice making it less likely to become gummy as it cooks. You can also allow your rice to soak for an hour, which will help your rice cook and create the perfect texture for sushi. But you can skip that part if what you are looking for is a quicker at-home recipe. Sometimes perfection isn’t necessary.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups of sushi rice
  • 3 cups water
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Put your rice in a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cold water for 2-4 minutes or until the water runs clear.
  2. Put the rice and water into a pot and bring to a boil, uncovered, on high heat.
  3. Cover and reduce heat to low/simmer once it reaches a boil and let cook for 15-20 minutes. Then remove from heat.
  4. In a small bowl, combine the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Whisk until the sugar dissolves.
  5. Combine the rice and the vinegar together until the rice is well coated.
  6. Let your rice cool down and use it in sushi bowls, handrolls, and sushi rolls.

Notes

  • You absolutely need to rinse your rice BEFORE cooking. This removes a lot of the starch and will give you a sticky rice rather than a mushy mess.
