A Dreamy Little Girl’s Bedroom

I finally finished Wendy’s big girl room. It took a lot longer than expected but it’s done and I couldn’t be happier, and neither could Wendy. Using hues of pinks, blues, purples, and greys I wanted to create a space that sparked creativity and relaxation and of course, I wanted it to be a pretty little girls room that Wendy loves and would want to spend time in. I also wanted to create a space that encouraged her to be a little more independent. I took some inspiration from all over the internet and from Wendy. I became fascinated by the Montessori philosophy and so I wanted to incorporate elements of that into her bedroom. Here’s the final result of all of that.

Almost immediately I knew I wanted her to have a reading area. A little sitting area that encouraged her to pick out a book and rock her little heart away. Her rocking chair was actually a piece from Chris’ childhood. His mom gifted it to us when Wendy was first born. The coolest thing about it is that it converts from high chair to rocking chair, or it used to. Once Wendy grew out of the high chair parts, we decided it would stay a rocking chair permanently.  I’m happy to say it gets used every single day.

When I was considering furniture, I took her age into consideration. I wanted furniture that looked good but I wouldn’t be worried if she nicked it or “accidentally” drew on it. Ikea was an obvious choice. Her dresser, bed, desk, chair, and closet fittings are from Ikea. All the details came from other retailers like Target, Home Sense, Etsy, etc. I’ll be posting a bedroom item list in the next few days if you guys are interested. I’ll add more specific details when it comes to the items used in her room.

Some of my favourite pieces in her room are those stuffed animal heads on the wall. They’re whimsical and cute. I also find that they are more interesting than a few photos hanging on the wall.

When it came to inside her drawers, I wanted it to be more organized. Wendy has a ton of clothing and she loves playing dress up. I swear this kid goes through four outfit changes in a day, just because. I bought the drawer organizers at Ikea. The dividers help keep everything separated and visible, so Wendy can easily pick out her shirts, pants, socks, etc.

Along with her reading area, I created a small area for her to sit and draw, or put together a puzzle. Really whatever she wants to do. I’ve watched her use the area to play with her dolls, look through a book, or just to sit at because as she says “I’m big girl, mommy.” While she might be too young to write, her room will grow with her and at the same time encourage her to grow.

When it came to her closet, I wanted it to make sure it was organized and that Wendy had easy access to her things. As you can see in the photo above, I added a clothing rail to the bottom shelf. Every night I place two to three outfits on that lower rail, so Wendy can pick out an outfit. It’s especially helpful for days that we plan on going out. I find this gives Wendy a bit of independence and encourages her to feel confident in her choices. Plus I also have a say for now. I pick a few outfits, but ultimately she makes the final decision. In the wired drawers on the other side, I made sure to put her shoes in one, her accessories in another, and the top one has her pull-ups.  If she can reach it, she can play with it. Having things at her level was important to me, as I want to encourage her to feel independent and to let her feel like her choices and decisions matter, even decisions like what book to read at bedtime or what clothes to put on in the morning.

I’m just so happy that Wendy adores her room and I love how colourful and inspiring it is. If you want to see what it looked like before, I’ve included a photo below. The photo on the left was from the listing before we bought the house. What a difference, right?

I had so much fun planning and decorating Wendy’s room, that it kind of sparked a little decor flame in me, now I want to redecorate our entire house! If you want to see more of the changes I’ll be making in the coming months, follow me on Instagram @withlovefrombex
