When it comes to Canadian treats, Nanaimo bars are definitely one of my family’s favourites. The three layers of deliciousness just melted in your mouth in the most satisfying way. Since we enjoy these bars so much, I thought I would try changing it up a bit. Present to you, Maple Bacon Nanaimo Bars. A yummy twist on a classic Canadian dessert.

I had some Maple Bacon seasoning in the house, thanks to an Influester box I received that included a number of Hello Flavour products.  I had never used this seasoning in a dessert before, chicken, yes, beef, of course, chocolate dessert, nope. So I had my doubts when I was in the testing phase. The results tasted so good. It has a subtle taste of maple bacon. So it’s not overpowering and you don’t have to worry about cleaning up greasy pans of bacon fat.

The only downside to this dessert is it can be time-consuming when it comes to the layers. You do a lot of waiting between layers just because each layer needs to set. But it’s all worth it and if you decide to make these for a summer BBQ, no one will be disappointed at all.

Description

A classic Canadian dessert with a bacon twist.

Ingredients

Scale

Crust:

  • 1/4 cup of sugar
  • 1/4 cup of cocoa
  • 3/4 cup of butter, melted
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups of graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 cup coconut, shredded
  • 2 tbsp maple bacon season
  • 1 cup walnuts, finely chopped (optional)

Icing layer:

  • 2 cups icing sugar
  • 2 tbsp pudding mix, vanilla
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 2 tbsp milk, 2%
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Chocolate layer:

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp Maple Bacon Seasoning

Instructions

For Crust:

  1. Preheat oven to 325F.
  2. Line a square pan with parchment paper and put aside.
  3. Combine all the crust ingredients in a bowl.
  4. Press crust mix into the square pan. Bake for 8 minutes.
  5. Remove pan from oven, cool completely. Then place in the fridge for at least 30 minutes

Icing Layer

  1. Combine all ingredients into a mixing bowl and mix.
  2. If you find that the icing mixture is too thick, add 1/2 tbsp of milk
  3. Remove your crust from the fridge, spread the icing layer over top of the crust. More sure to spread it evenly and all the way to the edges.
  4. Place the pan back in the fridge to chill for 30-60 minutes

Chocolate Layer:

  1. Bring an inch or two of water in a pot to a boil, and place a heatproof bowl on top of the pot.
  2. Melt the butter, maple bacon seasoning, and chocolate chips together.
  3. Stir until completely melted
  4. Pour over the icing in the pan, and place it back in the fridge to set (approximately 30 to 60 minutes).
